With Congress approving one military appropriation after another, the military makes itself more palatable to young people by offering huge bonuses. Meanwhile the media valorizes soldiers as selfless and obviously they are making a huge sacrifice. But in the end there is something in it for them. Namely, combat pay and the bonuses that go along with it.

So as long as Congress is too weak to deny Bush funding, the military will find candidates among the poor and the desperate. And the military is only one way to get the job done--there are also private security firms where every foot-soldier is paid very well through the mammath war appropriations and Iraqi oil money.
