German Press on Obama Victory: "The Dream is Alive"

Barack Obama's huge victory on Tuesday night was celebrated in Germany, as it was around the world. The tone of anti-Americanism which has prevailed over the past eight years suddenly vanished, and even the most cynical journalists were moved to extol the historic victory as a reaffirmation of the American Dream.

Der Spiegel's Gabor Steingart - who for months dismissed the notion that Obama had a real chance for the White House - writes about the Resurrection of the American Dream:

"His base note is conciliatory, his overtone is exalted and the harmony is finely balanced. If anyone out there still doubted that the American dream was alive, he called out to his supporters in Chicago, "tonight is your answer."

"At this defining moment," he declared, "change is coming to America."

Obama's tone embraces people, it doesn't exclude them. It's a tone of political romanticism. It doesn't solve problems, but it lessens the pain. Where Bush stoked fear, Obama spreads calm."

 Klaus Kasten of the Bayerischer Rundfunk also evokes the American Dream:

Für viele Menschen auf der ganzen Welt ist ein Traum wahr geworden. Barack Obama wird als 44. Präsident ins Weiße Haus in Washington einziehen. Ein historisches Ereignis. Der erste Schwarze in diesem Amt. Das ist mehr als eine politische Entscheidung. In einer Zeit, in der die USA weltpolitisch schwer angeschlagen sind, haben die Wähler gezeigt, dass in Amerika alles möglich ist. Sie haben acht Jahre Misswirtschaft abgewählt. Mit Obama haben sie sich für die Hoffnung auf eine bessere Zukunft entschieden. Aber sie haben nicht für Obama gestimmt, weil er schwarz ist, sondern weil er der bessere Kandidat war. (For people all over the work the dream has now become true. Barack Obama will move into the White House as the 44th president. A historic event. The first black man in this office. That is more than just a political decision. In an era where the US is under pressure geopolitically, the voters have shown that in America everything is possible.  They have rejected eight years of mismanagement. In Obama they have voted for a better future. But they didn't vote for Obama because he is black, rather because he was the better candidate.)

The usually sober and conservative Handelsblatt praised the victory as evidence of America's genius for self-renewal:

Wo Krisen und Kriege andere Länder verzagen lassen, greifen die USA beherzt zur Selbsterneuerung. Das ist es, worum die Welt Amerika beneidet. Und genau diese Fähigkeit haben die Amerikaner jetzt wieder bewiesen. Nicht kleinmütig wählt dieses Volk einen neuen Präsidenten, sondern mit großer Courage. Es baut seine Zukunft auf Barack Obama, einen Mann, der Hoffnung und Wandel verkörpert. Die Amerikaner wählten ihn wegen der Aussicht auf viele Chancen und trotz mancher Unwägbarkeiten. Sie haben die Kraft, zum ersten Mal in der Geschichte einen Afroamerikaner ins höchste Amt zu berufen. Für die USA ist dies ein historischer Moment. (While crises and wars bring other nations to despair, the US is able to find a path towards renewal.  That is why the world envies America. And once again they have shown this ability.  They weren't small-minded when they voted for a president, but rather displayed great courage. Theyhave staked their future on Barack Obama, a man who embodies hope and change. Americans chose him because of the prospect of new chances and opportunities and in spite of many uncertainties.  For the first time in history they have the power to put an African-American in the highest office. For the US this a historic moment.)

The Tageszeitung listened to the speech Obama gave to the crowd in Chicago Tuesday night after he had secured victory and heard a new American emphasis on solidarity and social justice instead of individual liberty: 

So ist mit der Obama-Ära im immerwährenden Streit um das Definitionsrecht des Begriffes "Amerika" ein neues Kapitel aufgeschlagen worden. Anstatt für Amerika als einen Ort uneingeschränkter individueller Freiheit zu kämpfen oder es als Ort uneingeschränkter Toleranz zu definieren, ist das Amerika von Franklin D. Roosevelt wieder auf der Tagesordnung. Nicht mehr Differenz oder die Minimierung von Regierungsintervention - Solidarität und soziale Gerechtigkeit sind die Themen. (The Obama era opens a new chapter in the struggle for defining the concept of "America".  Rather than fighting for an America that is a place of unlimited individual freedom, or defining it as a place of unlimited tolerance, the America of Franklin D. Roosevelt is once again front and center. It is no longer a matter of restricting government intervention - solidarity and social justice are now the prevailing themes.)  

Finally, the conservative daily Frankfurter Allgemeine states what the US press has been unable or unwilling to ackinowledge: America has shifted to the left (Amerika rückt nach links): 

Die große Verunsicherung vieler Amerikaner schlägt sich in dem Wunsch nach einer stärkeren Hand des Staates und mehr organisierter Solidarität nieder. Dafür steht Obama, nicht McCain. Sein Plan für eine umfassende Krankenversicherung setzt auf staatlichen Zwang, die vorgesehenen Steuererhöhungen für Spitzenverdiener auf eine Verschärfung der Progression in der Einkommensteuer. Und sein Versprechen, das Freihandelsabkommen mit Mexiko und Kanada „nachzubessern“, zielt auf höhere Handelsbarrieren – zum vermeintlichen Schutz amerikanischer Arbeiter. Umverteilung, nicht Chancengleichheit lautet Obamas Parole, die er in dem Versprechen ausgegeben hat, „den Wohlstand zu verteilen“. (The tremendous uncertainy of many Americans expresses itself in a desire for more government power and more organized solidarity. This favors Obama, not McCain. His plan for a comprehensive heath care insurance relies on government pressure, the planned tax increase on high income earners is based on a more progressive income tax. And his promise to "improve" NAFTA points to more trade barriers - to protect the interests of American workers.  Redistribution - not equal opportunity - is at the core of Obama's promise to "spread the wealth around". )
