Helmut Schmidt joins the Sarrazin intolerance bandwagon

This is sad.  Former chancellor Helmut Schmidt in an interview with Bild-Zeitung:

"Aber Sarrazin hat recht, was die Integrationsbereitschaft und -fähigkeit vieler Moslems betrifft: Wer vom Säuglingsalter an in einer völlig europafremden Umgebung groß geworden ist – mit völlig anderem Verhalten gegenüber dem Vater, gegenüber Frauen, mit einem anderen Ehrbegriff –, der lebt sich sehr viel schwerer in die deutsche Gesellschaft ein."

("But Sarrazin is correct concerning the willingness and ability of many Muslims to Integrate: whoever grows up in an environment that is completely different from Europe - with completely different norms of behavior concerning fathers, women and with a different code o honor - they will have difficulty fitting into German society.")

The problem with comments like these is that they ignore the reality of Muslims in Germany.  Most of them didn't grow up in environments "completely different from Europe".  In fact, many grew up in Germany and speak German.  They just aren't viewed as "integrated" because they don't conform to some ethnic ideal in the minds of a Thilo Sarrazin or a Horst Seehofer - or a Helmut Schmidt.  In fact, they are conisdered genetically inferior (to be fair, Schmidt says he rejects Sarrazin's crude gene theories). 

But it gets worse in the interview.  Schmidt raises the spectre of hordes of Muslims overrunning and destroying Europe - the neo-Nazi warning of Überfremdung:

"Allerdings habe ich erst recht keine positive Prognose, wenn wir weiterhin den Beitritt der Türkei zur EU in Aussicht stellen. Denn dann würden zig Millionen Moslems freien Zugang zu ganz Europa haben und unsere Arbeitsmärkte und Sozialsysteme überschwemmen. Da könnten wir auch gleich Algerien, Marokko, Libanon, Syrien mit einplanen. Und deren Konflikte – etwa zwischen Kurden und Türken – fänden dann in unseren Städten statt. Das wäre eine gewaltige Fehlentwicklung!"

(But I'm really pessimistic if we allow Turkey to join the European Union. Then millions of Muslims will gain entry to all of Europe and flood our labor market and social systems. We might as well just include Algeria, Morroco, Lebanon, and Syria. And then  their conflicts - like between the Kurds and the Turks - would play out in our cities.  That would be a terrible development!)

Mit extremen Beispielen kann man natürlich nach Belieben für und gegen alles argumentieren, aber Helmut Schmidt in die Nähe Sarazzins zu stellen, halte ich für falsch und übertrieben. Weder Deutschland noch ein anderes Land der Welt wird es sich leisten können, unbegrenzte Zuwanderungen zuzulassen, ohne zuvor die Frage beantwortet zu haben, wovon diese Zuwanderer denn leben sollen. Das hat erstmal gar nichts mit deren Religionen, Sitten und Gebräuchen zu tun. Sollen diese Zuwanderer sofort vollständigen Zugang zu den sozialen Sicherungssystemen erhalten, wenn sie keine Arbeit finden? Wird die Zuwanderung zu einem extrem hohen Überangebot an Arbeitskräften führen, so daß Lohndumping die Folge wäre? Ich selbst habe mal einen Arbeitsplatz verloren, weil das Arbeitsamt ständig Bewerber zu meinem Chef geschickt hat, die sich anboten, für den halben Lohn zu arbeiten, von dem wiederum die Hälfte ein Jahr lang vom Arbeitsamt subventioniert wurde. Wenn einem dann vom selben Arbeitsamt auch noch zu hören bekommt, man würde sich nicht ernsthaft um Arbeit bemühen, kann einem schon der Draht aus dem Hut springen.

When it comes to integration of Muslims into German society, an interesting survey has been published this week, concerning the attitude of Germans towards Islam and other religions in comparison to France, Portugal, Netherlands and Denmark. Highly interesting!

Interesting survey, Zyme. I definitely want to blog about this. The determining factor seems to be "frequency of contact" with Muslims, which is much lower in Germany than in the other countries surveyed.

I'm afraid it does not seem to be so easy, as the results in Portugal show, where there is even less contact with Muslims.

And there has been another survey published today which casts light on a different issue, namely the attitudes of the most wealthy quarter of the German population:

To cut it short, this study concludes that social Darwinism returns to the well earning part of the society, which consequently further alienates them from immigrants.

Yes, I saw the same article in Die Welt and found it quite interesting.

The survey results in Germany correlate to the Tea Party in the US - basically a white nationalist movement. Tea Partiers also tend to be more affluent (and whiter) than the US population on the whole
