It is not really correct to say that "today Pope Benedict XVI would regard these ideas as heresy."

Just a few years ago Pope Benedict XVI (in contrast to Pope John Paul II) invited the bishops during their synod in Rome to do precisely that, to reconsider the discipline of priestly celibacy.

The answer that came, especially from the bishops of the Eastern Rite Churches, who have experience with married priests in their own Churches, was "don't change the discipline".

You are right in stating that he was open to the idea, as in principle he is today, but that isn't equivalent with thinking that it is a good idea.
