Refugee Crisis: Two Germanys

Watching the events unfolding each day with respect to the refugees in Germany it is clear that Saxony is not Germany and the majority of Germans are repelled by the neo-Nazi hate and violence that has erupted over the refugees.

In fact it is not fair to the people of Saxony to describe the Free State as a Nazi swamp. There are plenty of people in Sachsen who sympathize with the plight of these desperate people seeking a  future for their families.

The two Germanys were very much on display this past Thursday when Chancellor Angela Merkel (belatedly) visited Heidenau.

On the one hand there were the neo-Nazi demonstrators, such as this woman who can be heard on a YouTube video screaming "Fotze, Fotze, Fotze!" over and over at the chancellor:

...and then there were the decent people who joined with the refugees in a welcoming party:

Two Germanys.  Let's hope the hateful minority is shamed to silence.

What's the Matter with Saxony?

What's the Matter with Kansas was the title of Thomas Frank's 2004 book on the transformation of his home state from cradle of progressive populism to a hotbed of right-wing Tea Party activism.  Today we can look at what's happening in the state of Saxony and the continuing violence against refugees and ask the same question.  What the Hell is going on in Saxony?  The Pegida marches last winter were only a foretaste of what was about to come. Now the neo-Nazis seem to be in control of vast swaths of Saxony; each night brings new violence and firebombings of refugee sanctuaries: 

Auf Kommando stürmen sie auf die Bundesstraße. Sie zünden Böller, werfen Steine und Flaschen gezielt auf Polizisten. Mehr als hundert Gewalttäter grölen „Wir sind das Volk!“ und „Ausländer raus!“ und „Nationaler Widerstand!“ Es ist Sonnabend um 22.45 Uhr. Wieder eskaliert die Gewalt vor dem kurzfristig als Flüchtlingsunterkunft eingerichteten ehemaligen Praktiker-Baumarkt in Heidenau.

("When the order is given they storm into the street. They light firecrackers, throw rocks and bottles at the police. More that a hundred of violent hooligans chant "We are the Volk!" and "Foreigners Get Out!" and "National Resistance!" It's Sunday evening 8:45. Once again the violence escalates in front of the hastily constructed refugee sanctuary in Heidenau.")

It seems that nobody can stop this right-wing mob that is wreaking havoc throughout Saxony. Not the police, not the counter-demonstrators, and certainly not the politicians.

Writing in Die Zeit, Stefan Schirmer is only half-joking when he calls for an immediate secession of Saxony from the Federal Republic  - a so-called Säxit:

Fast täglich sinkt das Maß an Polemik, das man aufbringen muss, um für diesen Schritt zu plädieren. So warnten Ärzte in Dresden mit Blick auf die "humanitäre Katastrophe" in einem Flüchtlingszeltcamp, hier sei das Grundgesetz außer Kraft gesetzt. Am selben Ort wurden Helfer des Roten Kreuzes angegriffen. Ob in Freital, Meißen, Freiberg, Hoyerswerda oder Böhlen – überall schlägt Ausländerhass in Gewalt um. Von deutschlandweit 202 Übergriffen auf Asylunterkünfte im ersten Halbjahr 2015 entfielen 42 auf Sachsen. Das Land ist, im schlechtesten Sinne, eine Klasse für sich.

(On a daily basis the reasons for demanding this drastic step become more apparent. Doctors watching the humanitarian catastrophe in the refugee tent camps warn that the conditions violate the German constitution. At these same locations Red Cross helpers are being attacked. Whether in Freital, Meissen, Freibert, Hoyerswerda or Boehlen - everywhere hatred of foreigners is boiling over into violence. In all of Germany there were 202 acts of violence against shelters for asylum seekers in the first half of 2015 - 42 took place in Saxony.  The state is - in the worst sense - in a class all by itself)

Since 1989 the German taxpayers have transferred billions of euros to the Free State of Saxony in subsidies to jump start its moribund economy.  Maybe it was not money well-spent?

Albrecht Müller on Russian media outlet RT Deutsch: There is no press freedom in America

We are now officially in the Alice in Wonderland Through the Looking Glass territory when a prominent German writer and blogger uses a Russian propaganda outlet to attack the United States for suppressing freedom of the press. 

Albrecht Müller, publisher of the NachDenkSeiten, has long believed that the United States is the source of all misery on the planet, and that the New York Times is controlled by the US government.  So RT Deutsch was more than happy to provide Herr Müller with a platform to go after the NY Times:  

Die New York Times (NYT) arbeitet auf das Engste mit der US-Regierung zusammen. So unterstützte die Zeitung laut Ray McGovern den illegalen Angriffskrieg gegen den Irak, indem sie z.B. im Auftrag der Regierung gefälschte Hinweise auf ein Atomwaffenprogramm veröffentlichte. Dieser Krieg kostete Hundertausenden Menschen das Leben. Das hält den damals verantwortlichen Reporter, Michael R. Gordon, nicht davon ab, heute desinformierende und bewusst irreführende Artikel zur Ukraine zu schreiben, die Russen und Präsident Putin zu dämonisieren und damit erneut Propaganda zu verbreiten, die einen Krieg mindestens billigend in Kauf nimmt. It is true that the New York Times did some bad reporting in the run-up to the invasion of Iraq in 2003. But to insinuate that the publisher of Pentagon Papers is controlled by the US government is absurd. Exactly one year after the invasion, the New York Times published a mea culpa concerning its earlier reporting on weapons of mass destruction in Iraq: 

But we have found a number of instances of coverage that was not as rigorous as it should have been. In some cases, information that was controversial then, and seems questionable now, was insufficiently qualified or allowed to stand unchallenged. Looking back, we wish we had been more aggressive in re-examining the claims as new evidence emerged — or failed to emerge.

The New York Times was a loud and consistent critic of the Bush administration's Iraq War policy and the War on Terror. 

More importantly, with respect to the broader issue of press freedom in the United States, fully one third of US newspapers opposed then President Bush's push for war with Iraq.  How many Russian media outlets opposed Putin's Anschluss of Crimea, or his active intervention in eastern Ukraine with weapons and troops? None. But that is not important to Albrecht Müller.

 By lending his name and his writing to RT Deutsch, Albrecht Müller spits on the graves of Anna Politkovskaya, Ilyas Shurpayev,Yury Shebalkin,Konstantin Borovko,Leonid Etkind and scores of other journalists - all of whom were murdered by Putin's thugs for daring to report on the widespread corruption in Russia.  And, according to Freedom House, the situation for journalists has gotten much worse following the Russian invasion of eastern Ukraine: 

Physical assaults on journalists were reported in a range of Russian regions in 2014. Several reporters investigating the deaths of Russian soldiers in Ukraine were threatened and attacked. In August, Lev Shlosberg, a Pskov-based newspaper publisher and member of the opposition Yabloko party, suffered a serious assault that left him unconscious. Shlosberg said the attack was related to his paper’s investigation into the secret deployment of Russian troops from the Pskov region to eastern Ukraine.

I won't go into the dire position of journalists in Crimea following its "liberation" by Russian forces in 2014.  Suffice it to say that all reporters critical of the situation in Crimea have been either beaten into silence or imprisoned.

But the truth is, Albrecht Müller doesn't really care about press freedom.  He has lost most of his credibility and is seen by most serious journalists in Germany as a conspiracy nut.  To lash out at his former colleagues he has gone over to the dark side - and in the process become a latter-day Lord Haw-Haw.

 

Amazon's toxic workplace ....also in Germany

Last weekend the New York Times published an in-depth report on the working conditions at Amazon's Seattle headquarters. Over the years there have been many expose's of the harsh conditions at Amazon's distribution centers scattered across the globe, but this was the first time anyone reported on the brutal environment for Amazon's army of managers.  The article describes a cutthroat culture based on data-driven performance metrics, where managers are basically on call 24/7, are forced to abandon any semblance of family life, and are encouraged to inform on on their peers with feedback software that could have been invented by the East German Stasi.

The NYTimes piece hit a nerve and received extensive exposure - and not just in the United States.  In Germany, as well, people are scrutinizing Amazon's treatment of its employees.  The Süddeutsche Zeitung has a companion piece reporting on the experiences of Amazon workers in Germany:

Amazon hat auch in Deutschland keinen guten Ruf. So erstellt die Firma in ihren Versandzentren sogenannte Inaktivitätsprotokolle. In einem dieser Protokolle aus dem Jahr 2014, das der SZ vorliegt, wird einem Mitarbeiter vorgeworfen, sich "von 07.27 bis 07.36 Uhr unterhalten" zu haben. Stefanie Nutzenberger, Vorstandsmitglied der Gewerkschaft Verdi, sagte, das System Amazon bestehe auch hierzulande aus "Arbeitshetze und Druck". Davon zeugten extrem hohe Krankenquoten von 20 Prozent und mehr.

("Amazon doesn't have a good reputation in Germany.  In its distribution centers it has implemented "inactivity reports".  In one of these reports from 2014 in possession of this paper an employee is accused or "talking with others between the 7:27AM and 7:36AM.  Stefanie Nutzenberger, board member of the Verdi trade union, said that the Amazon system in Germany consists of "unacceptable work pressure".  The result has been a high level of workplace related illness - up to 20% or more.")

Still, another former Amazon manager defends the company in the readers' forum, pointing out that the company has achieved tremendous success while Germany has lagged far behind in realizing the potential of the Internet:

Für mich ist Amazon eines der besten Unternehmen, die es aktuell gibt. Ich habe extrem viel gelernt und bin dankbar, dass ich dort arbeiten konnte. Das deutsche Händler es verpasst haben, sich frühzeitig auf das Internet einzulassen, oder wir vielleicht einfach auch nicht die Visionäre a la Jeff Bezos haben, kann nicht das Problem von Amazon sein. Bevor wir in unserer typisch deutschen Angst vor Veränderung und Jammermentalität mit dem Finger auf andere zeigen, schlage ich vor, wir setzen uns auf den Hosenboden und fragen uns lieber mal, warum das Internet und all die Möglichkeiten, die andere genutzt haben, quasi an uns vorbeigeht. Erinnern möchte ich in diesem Zusammenhang nur mal an das Thema flächendeckendes und schnelles Internet oder die lausigen Mobilfunkverbindung außerhalb unserer Städte... I have to admit, I found the NY Times article a bit over the top.  I worked for a number of years on Wall Street where the conditions described at Amazon were (are?) the norm.  But instead of "feedback software", our feedback on Wall Street consisted of bonuses.  The bonuses made the pressure and long hours slightly more tolerable. I appreciated the money and learning experience in my work, but I'm happy that I no longer work for a Wall Street firm.

Who is Willy Wimmer?

The Tagesspiegel has a piece discussing the "Querfront" (literally: "Cross-Front") movement in Germany which unites the far-left and far-right in hatred of the United States, support of Putin, and rejection of mainstream press (Ein Netzwerk für Putin und Pegida).

A key figure in the Quefront movement is Willy Wimmer, who served in the Bundestag for 33 years and was the defense spokesman for the CDU (Christian Democrats).  Wimmer is an outspoken critic of the United States and a reliable apologist for the Kremlin.  I note that Willy Wimmer will speak at the upcoming anti-American Berlin conference on the US "occupation" (Besatzung)  of Germany. 

Most Americans will have never heard of Willy Wimmer.  There are many YouTube videos of Wimmer attacking the "war-mongering" United States and praising Russian aggression in the Ukraine, but they are all in German.  I did manage to find an interview with Wimmer in English with the Putin propaganda outlet Sputnik where one can gain insight into his virulent anti-American perspective:

WImmer agrees that the CIA has taken control of the United States:

Sputnik: The CIA and the military industrial complex in the United States have taken control of the Government. They will ally themselves with anyone, as long as it serves their goal of defeating an enemy. This time the target is Russia. There is not anyone else who is going to fight Russia or that they can use against Russia. And that is why I think they are supporting these Nazis. Do you agree with that?

Wimmer: Yes! There is a good understanding here that forces in the United States or in other countries, they act together with those who are willing to act against the common enemy. And there are strange words in Germany about such an attitude. And, therefore, it is complicated.We know for years that the right-wing forces in Germany are financially subsidized out of the US, out of Denmark, out of the Netherlands, out of France and out of Spain. So there is obviously a development on the Western side of our common continent, which is dangerous not only when you look into history.

Wimmer agrees that the CIA was infiltrated by German Nazis after the war:

Sputnik: After the WW II many Nazis went to the US, something like 40,000, I believe, they founded a lot of programs in the CIA. Do you see any correlation?

Wimmer: When you look on the today's situation, it is obvious that the forces in the US are eager to get control over the Russian resources of oil and gas, and everything else. And there is an ongoing interest of these US forces to get in control of everything which is on Russian soil. And the former US State Secretary Ms. Albright made it very public that what is on the Russian soil, it can't belong to one country.

There is obviously an understanding which has the historic roots, which go back to the situation after the First World War.

There is a common understanding among historians that you can't explain Adolf Hitler without mentioning Henry Ford. And the most complicated problem in my understanding has been the efforts of Henry Kissinger in the late 90's to destroy the international rule of law, and to replace it by the American-led international law structure.

Wimmer agrees that the Ukraine is killing Russian journalists.  Wimmer is angry that Hillary Clinton said mean things about Vladimir Putin:

Sputnik: What is your opinion on the killing of journalists, on the refugee situation in Ukraine and then the Russian reaction to everything that is going on there?

Wimmer:The killing of journalists is an organized effort to continue with the control of the mainstream media in the West.

For some weeks the only chance to get a fair picture of the situation in Ukraine on TV has been Russia Today, France 24 or Al Jazeera.

When you kill Russian journalists, you see efforts to maintain the dominance in propaganda. It is not a coincidence that journalists are killed. It is a combined effort to do so. And, therefore, it is an attack on democracy, that's for sure.

With regards to President Putin, it is disastrous and it leads to a conflict, if you blame the president of another country in the way as it had been done here for weeks and months in the past. And we are all familiar with the words of Hillary Clinton and of others against President Putin.

We are now in the 25th year after the collapse of the Berlin Wall and here in Germany nobody has an understanding of blaming President Putin or the Russian people in the way that Hillary Clinton did it.

Based on everything I've read and listened to, Willy Wimmer is a reliable spokesman for Putin's Fifth Column in Germany. 

Blogger/Journalist silenced after neo-Nazis threaten his family

The refugee situation in Germany has unleashed a wave of extreme right-wing violence.  I wrote about Til Schweiger's battle against racists on Facebook and the arson attacks on sanctuaries for asylum-seekers. But now it has escalated to attacks on journalists and anyone who sympathizes with the refugees. 

Heinrich Schmitz is a lawyer who frequently bogs about civil rights and in a recent article condemned the arson attack on a refugee center in Freital.  The result was that police received an anonymous call from a "Heinrich Schmitz" that he had just murdered his wife and the body could be found at his home (address was given).  The police broke into his home and informed Schmitz's daughter that her mother had been murdered.  The event traumatized the whole family and Schmitz, in a piece published in Der Tagespiegel, stated he has given up all political commentary: 

Als Bürger fühle ich eine Verantwortung für unsere Gesellschaft und für den Rechtsstaat, die ich mit meinen Kolumnen wahrzunehmen versucht habe. Schreiben, argumentieren und erklären ist nun mal das, was ich am Besten kann. Als Ehemann und Vater habe ich eine Verantwortung für das Wohlbefinden und die Sicherheit meiner Familie.

("As a citizen I feel a sense of responsibility for our society and the rule of law - which I tried to illuminate in my columns. Writing, arguing and explaining- those are the things I do best. But as a husband and father I am responsible for the well-being and safety of my family")

So another voice of reason has been silenced by bullying and threats of violence. Schmitz ends his "capitulation confession" with a scathing criticism of Angela Merkel for "standing by" while neo-Nazi's prevail:

Ich habe kapiert, dass die „schweigende“ Mehrheit der Bevölkerung am liebsten „schweigt“. Dass sie keineswegs mit dem Hass auf den Straßen einverstanden ist, aber lieber hinter den Gardinen steht, statt selbst auf die Straße zu gehen. Dass die Frau an der Spitze dieses Landes das Schweigen zur Regierungsmaxime erhoben hat und sich gerade deshalb alternativloser Beliebtheit erfreut. Dieses Schweigen wird über kurz oder lang zu einem „Schweigen der Lämmer“ werden. Es soll dann nur niemand behaupten, er hätte nichts gewusst oder er habe nichts tun können. Ich habe es oft genug gesagt. Das ist jetzt vorbei.

("I can now see that the "silent majortiy" prefers to stay silent. That they may not agree with the hate on the streets but they'd rather stand behind the curtains instead of confronting the hate on the street. I can now see that the woman at the top of our nation has elevated silence to the maxim of her administration and enjoys high poll numbers. No one can say that they didn't know about this or that nothing can be done about it.  I've said plenty about it - but that's over now.")

Is Schmitz over-reacting?  Are the neo-Nazis just making idle threats?   Hardly.

A couple in eastern Germany who spoke out against neo-Nazis in their village have been given police protection after a fire gutted their barn. Artists Birgit and Horst Lohmeyer live in Jamel, near Rostock - a village that has become a neo-Nazi meeting place. No-one was hurt in the fire. Chemical evidence of arson was found after the big 150-year-old barn was gutted on Wednesday night.The couple had earlier reported harassment by neo-Nazis.Their anti-Nazi stand has earned them national recognition, German media report.

From "judenfrei" to "asylantenfrei"

The Nazis dreamed of a Germany that was "free of Jews" - judenfrei.  The neo-Nazis of today dream of a Germany free of refugees and asylum-seekers - asylantenfrei.  They will do whatever it takes - beating, terrorizing refugees on the street and torching the homes that shelter them - to realize their dream.

The neo-Nazi organization Der dritte Weg ("The Third Way") celebrates the arson attack on a group home for refugees with the headline:  Nach Brandanschlag bleibt Tröglitz asylantenfrei ("Tröglitz remains free of asylum-seekers following an arson attack.").  

The arsonists - who were just lucky not to have murdered anyone- receive much praise for protecting the integrity of the German Volk: 

Sollten Personen, die sich gegen die zunehmende Überfremdung ihrer Heimat zur Wehr setzen, hinter dieser Aktion stecken, dann haben sie ihr Ziel erreicht. Vorerst kommen keine Asylanten nach Tröglitz – wir würden es uns wünschen, dass es auch dabei bleibt.

("If the people involved in this act were defending their homeland from being overrun with foreign elements, then they have achieved their goal.  For the time being no asylum-seekers will come to Tröglitz - we hope very much that it remains so.")

Let's hope that officials in Berlin - from the chancellor on down- take immediate action to prevent further violence against refugees - and all foreigners - before we witness a recurrence of a Kristallnacht.

Chemtrails and other conspiracy theories

Die Zeit has a good piece (english, deutsch) on the growing phenomenon of conspiracy theories and the threat that they pose to our open liberal democracy: 

Never before has so much information been available, and never before could so many people state freely what they believe to be true. Everyone can construct their own reality that can shake up the power structure. This is actually good news, because it is dangerous for dictators and despots. But on the other hand, never before has it been so difficult to attain a clear picture out of the flood of contradictory information. Anyone can find confirmation for their own truth and perspective. Rumors and conspiracy theories spread rampantly. We are experiencing an unleashing of thought fueled by conviction, a new kind of culture war.

The absurd "chemtrails" conspiracy is stupid, but relatively harmless.  But not all conspiracy theories are so benign.  The authors discuss the Kopp Verlag and its star (fake) journalist Udo Ulfkotte, about whom I have written extensively.  Ulfkotte and his colleagues at Kopp relentlessly attempt to discredit the mainstream media in Germany as totally controlled by outside forces - the CIA, the Federal Reserve, Jewish bankers, etc. - poisoning the public debate, while getting quite rich in the process.  The result is the Pegida movement, which is now morphing into violence against asylum seekers in Germany: 

What is dangerous in all this is not only the hate that divides society. Danger arises when a conspiracy theory becomes a justification for engaging in violence — when the conspiracy theorist believes that he must use other means to finally open the eyes of everyone else. And when a conspiracy theorist believes that he is not only being persecuted by the "power structure," but will also be eliminated at some point, will he not then attempt to preempt his opponents — and eliminate them first? "In the parallel universe of their forums and hate-filled books, the prophets of the great media conspiracy already now are constructing a wartime situation that leaves no time for thinking in alternatives," says the media scientist Mr. Pörksen. That is ultimately the manner of thinking of suicide bombers.

The Zeit authors are right to point out that conspiracy theories are not just a threat to Germany, but also to the United States:

America is the land of the free, but it is also the land of the apocalypse. Here distrust of authority is a basic institutional orientation. Americans have organized their country so that the individual states have power, and not the elite in Washington. The opinions of individuals are traditionally given just as much weight as the majority opinion. But the rejection of scientific results has another basis. It is the fear of losing control — not only over the world, but also over one's own life.

The presidential campaign of Donald Trump can be seen as a triumph of conspiracy theories.  Trump has been the biggest proponent of the "Birther" theory that President Obama was actually born in Kenya, and therefore not eligible for the office of president.  Now he is winning huge support by stating - without a shred of evidence - that the Mexican government is sending rapists and murders over the border to the US as illegal immigrants.  Fortunately, no demagogues like Trump have emerged (so far) in Germany, but the violence against asylum seekers from Kosovo, Africa and the Middle East - especially in eastern Germany, is very disturbing. 

Albrecht Müller uncovers the vast CIA conspiracy to spread democracy

Albrecht Müller, the author and editor of the influential Web site NachDenkSeiten, has a simple, but very consistent, worldview:  everything bad that happens anywhere is the fault of the United States.  That is why the working title of Müller's new book is "Der Tod kommt aus Amerika" ("Death Comes from America").

In Albrecht Müller's opinion, one of the bad things happening over the past decade has been the threat to authoritarian regimes by popular protests.  We've seen huge popular movements in the Ukraine, Georgia, Russia, Syria, Hong Kong, the so-called Arab Spring, etc.  In some cases, the protests have led to an overthrow of the dictator.  But, as Albrecht Müller has "discovered", these protest movements have nothing to do with aspirations of the people for a more open, representative, liberal democracy.  Rather, they are all sham movements manipulated by the CIA in the cynical goal of expanding American imperialist interests.  

Albrecht Müller has dissected the methodology used in every instance by a small group of organizers funded by the CIA or organizations affiliated with the CIA:

• Man diskreditiere einen Staatschef als Autokrat, Diktator oder Tyrann – unabhängig davon, ob er gewählt wurde oder nicht.
• Man werfe ihm Korruption, Wahlfälschung und andere Verbrechen vor.
• Man wähle ein einprägsames Symbol, zum Beispiel eine Rose, eine Tulpe, eine Farbe oder eine Faust.
• Man schaffe ein Motto, man einige sich auf Slogans. Im Falle Jugoslawiens mit Milosevic waren das: „Er ist fertig“. „Es ist Zeit.“ – Im Falle Putins und Russlands hieß es: „Putin kaputt“.
• Man organisiere emotional aufwühlende und medienwirksame Demonstrationen.
• Man achte darauf, dass die Kampagne spielerisch, unterhaltsam und unprofessionell wirkt, und auch darauf, dass die Zielpersonen des Regime Change der Lächerlichkeit preisgegeben werden.
• „Sie sind die Kinder von Gandhi, Gates und Coca-Cola – und die Helden von heute“,
• Die Strategien der Revolutions-GmbH wurden aus den Werbe- und Verkaufspraktiken der Multis abgeleitet. Merke: Wo Demokratie draufsteht, sind Heuschrecken drin.

1.   ("you label the head of state an autocrat, dictator or tyrant - regardless of whether he was elected nor not)
2. You accuse him of corruption, election fraud, and other crimes.
3. You pick out a memorable symbol, as, for example, a rose, a tulip, a color or a fist.
4. You come up with a motto or slogan.  In the case of Milosevic it was "He's done", "It's time", in the case of Putin it was "Putin kaputt."
5. You organize emotionally stirring, media-impactful demonstrations.
6. You carefully make the campaign playful so it seems unprofessional and enjoyable to watch while making the target appear ridiculous.
7. "They are the children of Gandhi, Gates and Coca-Cola - and the heroes of today"
8. The strategies of the "Revolution Incorporated" are derived from the advertising campaigns of multi-national corporations. On the outside - democracy, inside - big capital.)

So how did Albrecht Müller uncover this insidious American plot to spread democracy?  Did he interview former CIA agents, speak with Edward Snowden, receive secret documents from Wikileaks? No, all of this explosive information comes from a 2005 article in Der Spiegel.  This is rather odd, since normally Albrecht Müller accuses Der Spiegel as being part of the Lügenpresse - the "liar press", controlled by the CIA.
