Jürgen Todenhöfer's ISIS Lovefest

The author and "peace activist" Jürgen Todenhöfer spent time in Syria in an ISIS-controlled area and was impressed by what he saw.  Since then he has made a nice living telling German audiences what they want to hear: ISIS wants peace, and this is achievable if only we would sit down with the fighters and understand their point of view.  It is the Americans who are responsible for all the violence; the ISIS atrocities - whether it's the mass beheadings or the massacre on the streets of Parrs - are only an "understandable" response to what the Americans have done to them. 

Last evening Jürgen Todenhöfer presented his new documentary film Inside ISIS in Essen and afterwards took questions from the admiring audience.  The journalist Simon Ilger from Die PrinzessinnenReporter blog was present and filed this report: 

Spannender war da die anschließende Fragerunde an Todenhöfer. Zu wirklich kritischen Fragen kam es nicht, insgesamt bestand ein gewisser antiamerikanischer Grundkonsens im Auditorium. Hin und wieder brach auch offener Antiamerikanismus heraus, z.B. als seitens eines Zuschauers proklamiert wurde, es gäbe „keine guten Amerikaner“. Die Antwort auf nahezu jede Frage seitens der Zuschauer führt Todenhöfer früher oder später zu seinem Lieblingsthema. Für ihn ist der Westen, bzw. eigentlich die USA schuld am IS. Ohne Bush hätte es keinen IS gegeben und besiegt werden kann der IS auch nur durch die Sunniten oder waren es die Schiiten oder die Kurden. Auf keinen Fall jedoch durch die Amerikaner. Todenhöfer behauptet der IS mache halt nur das, was die Amerikaner vorher bereits getan hätten und würde sich nur gegen den westlichen Terrorismus wehren. Sein Gespräch mit Abu Qatada, welches keine 45 Minuten zuvor lief, vergisst er geflissentlich: Abu Qatada faselt darin von Eroberungsplänen in Europa und nicht von Rache für irgendwelche Luftangriffe. Eine Lösung hat er auch direkt parat: man muss miteinander reden. Eine große Friedenskonferenz für den Nahen und mittleren Osten, davon träumt Todenhöfer. Alle müssen an einen Tisch: der IS, die Baath-Partei und alle kleine syrischen Rebellengruppen. Ob die USA auch mitspielen dürfen, verrät er nicht.

(The ensuing question and answer session was more interesting. There weren't really any critical questions, and on the whole there was a widespread anti-American consensus in the auditorium. Now and then there were blatant anti-American outbursts, such as when one member of the audience shouted "there are no good Americans."  Todenhöfer had basically the same answer for every question the audience asked: for him, the west - or rather, the US - was to blame for ISIS.  Without Bush ISIS wouldn't exist, and ISIS can only be defeated by the Sunnis  - or was it the Shiites, or maybe the Kurds.  But in no case by the Americans. Todenhöfer states that ISIS is just doing what the Americans had been doing earlier and are only defending themselves against western terrorism.  He conveniently forgot his conversation with Abu Qatada from 45 minutes earlier.  Abu Qatada fantasized about conquering Europe; there was nothing about revenge for an airstrike.  But he (Todenhöfer ) has a solution at hand: one just needs to talk to each other. Todenhöfer dreams of a big peace conference for the Middle East. Everyone at the table: ISIS, the Baath Party, and all the Syrian rebel groups. He leaves the US out.)

 

 It is very unfortunate that Todenhöfer was not able to sit down for a "peace conference" with ISIS in Palmyra:

"A mass grave including the bodies of women and children has been uncovered in the former Isis stronghold of Palmyra....The report linked the discovery to a massacre documented in May 2015, when Isis militants were reported to have slaughtered more than 400 mostly women and children in Palmyra just two days after capturing the city."

Or with ISIS forces in Fallujah:

"Iraqi forces have discovered a mass grave northwest of Fallujah believed to contain the bodies of 400 soldiers and civilians."

But these atrocities (and hundreds more like it) are completely understandable.  And ultimately the Americans are to blame.
