I had the privilege of associating with the Rumanian-German poet and journalist Niki Berwanger at the Deutsche Sommerschule am Pazifik in Portland, Oregon. This was in the 80s. Berwanger was kicked out of Rumania for criticizing the Ceausescu regime in his paper, the Neue Banater Zeitung. I learned a lot about the horrors of Rumania from him. What broke his heart, he says, was how women were treated. He was a real Mensch and he died too young.
I have not gotten around to Herta Mueller's work yet, just such a backlog of things to read and the distractions of our crazy election season.

Hattie, I hope you do read Herta Mueller - she has an extraordinary, unique voice. Maybe after Nov. 8? :)
